Requirements
Hard- and Software¶
For the duration of the course you need a computer and you have to install the following applications.
If you bring a Mac computer:
- You need access to the ETH Wi-Fi and establish VPN. For more information please visit the ITS Service Desk
- SCP client: Cyberduck or FileZilla
- R for statistical computing
- RStudio
- Text editor: Atom
- Markdown editor: haroopad or MacDown.
If you bring a Windos computer:
- You need access to the ETH Wi-Fi and establish VPN. For more information please visit the ITS Service Desk.
- SCP client: Cyberduck or FileZilla.
- Windows 10: Install Linux Bash Shell or use MobaXterm
- R for statistical computing
- RStudio
- Text editor: Atom
- Markdown editor: haroopad
GDC Computing Guidelines¶
On the first day of the course you will get a student login on the GDC servers. Please download and read the GDC computing guidelines carefully.
Student Project¶
If you want to receive the 2 credit points for the course you have choose a project and write a report.
For your project please follow the guidelines bellow. Before you start, please let us know what you would like to do, so we can "approve" it.

You should work at least six hours on your project (including Friday afternoon).

Write a 4-5 pdf page report with figures and code (e.g. use a markdown editor):
- Project Description: What is the project about?
- Methods: What did you do and how?
- Results: What did you find? What did and what did not work?
- Conclusions: What did you learn? What would you do better?

Submit the report (pdf) to JCW via email by 31 July 2019.
