Markdown

Markdown is a lightweight markup language with plain-text-formatting syntax to convert, for example, text to HTML. It is perfect to write (bioinformatic) reports that contain text, figures and code. Most of the primary data analysis is done in the Linux environment. To increase reproducibility we are going to use a markdown editor. I recommend your install Haroopad or MacDown (Mac user only) but any other markdown editor will do.

The best way to get a feel for the syntax is to study examples (see below). Try to generate titles different sizes, add plain text, code an pictures. Have a look at the manuals, reference guide, or cheat sheet if you are already advanced for help. Also, try to export your md file to html or pdf.

Example

Download the Markdown Example. Either click on the link or mouse-click right and choose download file. Open the md file with your markdown editor and try to understand the content and play with it.
